SEE WHAT'S POSSIBLE IN YOUR LANDSCAPE

Every property is already a living system. Let's learn how to read yours.

Walk your property with Todd Breitenstein, The Grateful Gardener, and explore the relationships among soil, water, sunlight, plants, wildlife, people, history, and possibility.

Whether you're wondering what to plant, rethinking a lawn, creating habitat, growing food, solving a stubborn garden problem, or simply asking What could this place become?, a consultation begins by seeing the whole.

YOUR LANDSCAPE IS ALREADY TELLING A STORY
A wet corner. A struggling lawn. A magnificent old Tree. Moss beneath a Maple. Water moving across a driveway. A sunny patch beside the house. Birds returning to one particular shrub. These aren't isolated details.THEY ARE CLUES.Todd approaches a property as a living system, looking at how its pieces relate before deciding what should change.Sometimes the best answer is a new garden. Sometimes it is fewer plants, less lawn, healthier soil, better water management, more habitat, or simply working differently with what is already there. The first step isn't changing the landscape.
It's understanding it.

WHAT CAN WE EXPLORE?

GARDENS & PLANTING
Plant choices, existing gardens, native plants, edible landscapes, Pollinator habitat, seasonal interest, and diversity.

SOIL & LIVING SYSTEMS
Soil conditions, organic matter, biological activity, compaction, fertility, compost, mulching, and soil life.

LAWN ALTERNATIVES
Where lawn is useful, where it isn't, and opportunities for native planting, meadow, food, habitat, groundcovers, or less mowing.

WATER
Drainage, runoff, wet areas, roof water, slopes, rain gardens, infiltration, irrigation, and water conservation.

HABITAT & ECOLOGY
Trees, Birds, Pollinators, beneficial insects, soil organisms, and the relationships that create resilient landscapes.

FOOD & PERMACULTURE
Vegetables, herbs, fruit, perennial foods, companion planting, composting, water systems, zones of use, and permaculture principles.

You don't need to know which category your problem belongs in. That's Todd's job.

WHAT A CONSULTATION FEELS LIKE

MOSTLY, WE WALK.

We look. Ask questions. Turn things over. Notice where the sun falls, where water travels, what is thriving, what is struggling, what has been tried before, and how you actually want to live in the space.

Todd shares what he sees, explains ecological relationships, answers questions, explores practical possibilities, and helps separate what matters from what doesn't.

You don't need a master plan before Todd arrives.

CURIOSITY IS ENOUGH.

THE GARDEN YOU WANT TO LIVE IN

Your property isn't a Nature preserve with a house inconveniently sitting in the middle of it.

It's where you live.

Maybe you want Tomatoes outside the kitchen. A place to drink coffee. Fewer hours behind a mower. More Birds. Flowers for the table. Food for Pollinators. Somewhere for grandchildren to explore. Or simply a yard that feels more alive.

Good ecological design begins with the land and with the people who belong to it.

Todd looks for places where those needs can support one another.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

A consultation may be a good fit for people:

• buying a property and wondering what they've inherited
• overwhelmed by an existing landscape
• considering a new garden or major change
• interested in native plants or Pollinator habitat
• growing more food
• reducing lawn
• dealing with soil, drainage, shade, or persistent problems
• exploring permaculture or ecological gardening
• making a property more sustainable
• standing outside thinking, “I know this could be something more.”

HOW IT WORKS

1. TELL TODD ABOUT YOUR PROPERTY
Share where you are, what's on your mind, and what you're considering.

2. WALK THE LAND TOGETHER
Todd visits the property for focused observation, conversation, questions, and possibilities.

3. LEAVE WITH A WAY FORWARD
Understand the landscape, identify priorities, and know what makes sense to do next.

WHY TODD?

Todd has spent decades learning landscapes from many directions: as a gardener, ecological restorationist, conservationist, garden-center owner, permaculture practitioner, organic land-care professional, educator, and lifelong student of the forest.

But perhaps his most useful qualification is simpler.

HE LOVES WALKING PROPERTIES.

He loves discovering why something is happening, noticing relationships that aren't immediately obvious, and helping someone see a familiar landscape differently.

Todd isn't arriving to impose his garden on your property.

He's there to help you discover yours.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

A consultation may be all you need.

You may leave ready to tackle the next steps yourself. You may decide to hire someone for a particular project, spend a season observing, begin with one small change, or simply see your landscape differently than you did before.

There is no expectation that a consultation needs to become a larger project.

Todd's job is to help you understand what you're seeing, identify what matters most, and find a practical way forward.

Sometimes the best next step is to do less, not more.

LET'S WALK YOUR GARDEN
You don't need to have the answers. You don't even need to know exactly what the problem is.
Tell Todd a little about your property, what you're noticing, and what you'd love to make possible.
We'll start there.
