The Garden Led Inward
What if the principles that restore living landscapes can also help us understand ourselves?
After a lifetime spent studying gardens, forests, soil, disturbance, resilience, and restoration, Todd began noticing something he could no longer ignore.
The patterns he observed in the living world were also present in us.
That realization became The Ecology of You™.

We Are Ecosystems Too
A garden is not simply a collection of plants. A forest is not simply a collection of Trees. And a human being is not simply a collection of symptoms, habits, thoughts, relationships, and responsibilities.
We are living systems.
Our physical health, emotional lives, relationships, environments, histories, communities, sense of purpose, and patterns of attention continually affect one another.
Todd spent years learning to see those relationships in landscapes.
Eventually he asked:
Why would we expect ourselves to work any differently?
EXPLORE THE ECOLOGY OF YOU™
The Question Changed
For most of Todd's life, the questions were outside.
Why is this plant struggling? What happened to this soil? Where is the water going? What relationship is missing? What conditions would allow this landscape to recover?
Then life provided disturbances of its own.
The questions turned inward.
What does depletion look like inside a person? What happens when we live in constant activation? Which relationships support us and which deplete us? What conditions help us thrive?
What does restoration look like when the landscape is a human life?
Restoration Is Relationship
The Ecology of You™ explores human life through interconnected terrains:
Physical — body, energy, rest, nourishment, movement, regulation
Mental & Emotional — thoughts, emotions, patterns, stress, attention, response
Relational — people, boundaries, connection, community, exchange
Environmental — the places we inhabit and the conditions they create
Purpose & Spiritual — meaning, belonging, values, wonder, faith, purpose, and relationship to something larger
One ecosystem.
Disturbance Is Not the End of the Story
Forests burn. Trees fall. Rivers flood. Living systems are disturbed.
Then life responds.
New conditions create new possibilities. Relationships reorganize. What emerges may not resemble what existed before.
Ecologists call this succession.
Restoration isn't always about returning to who we were before something happened.
Sometimes the better question is:
What wants to grow here now?

Learning to Tend the Conditions
A gardener cannot command a plant to thrive.
You can provide appropriate light. Tend the soil. Offer water. Reduce unnecessary stress. Support beneficial relationships. Pay attention. Respond when conditions change.
Then the living system participates in its own growth.
The Ecology of You™ approaches human restoration with similar humility.
Todd isn't interested in telling people who they should become. The work is about recognizing the conditions surrounding the life already being lived and exploring what might support greater resilience, connection, regulation, meaning, and aliveness.
You don't grow the person.
You tend the conditions.
Symptoms Are Not the Story
When a Tree begins to decline, an ecologist doesn't simply paint the leaves green.
Something is happening.
Perhaps the soil changed. Roots were damaged. Water became scarce or excessive. Disease is present. The Tree may be responding to a disturbance that happened years ago.
The visible symptom matters.
But the symptom is not the whole story.
The Ecology of You™ begins with similar curiosity.
Instead of immediately asking, What's wrong with me? we can learn to ask:
What's happening in the ecosystem?
A Path, Not The Path
There are many ways home.
Science can be a path. Nature can be a path. Recovery can be a path.
Therapy, community, creativity, service, contemplation, faith, movement, gardening, prayer, meditation, laughter, and being loved well can all become parts of a human ecology.
The Ecology of You™ is not offered as the path.
It is one path Todd has come to understand through lived experience and a lifetime of learning from living systems.
You bring your own experience. Your own beliefs. Your own questions. Your own way of understanding what is larger than yourself.
There is room on the trail.
The Trail Guide
Todd's role is not to stand at the destination and tell someone else how to arrive.
He's walking too.
He has studied some of the terrain. Walked through difficult sections. Learned from scientists, gardeners, teachers, spiritual traditions, recovery communities, forests, mistakes, relationships, and his own life.
He can point toward patterns. Offer tools. Ask questions. Sometimes suggest another trail. And sometimes stand beside someone long enough for them to notice what was already there.
The journey remains yours.
From the Garden to The Ecology of You™
The Grateful Gardener taught Todd to look closely.
Permaculture taught him to look for relationships.
Ecological restoration taught him about disturbance and recovery.
Recovery taught him that knowing something and living it are different things.
Community taught him that nothing thrives alone.
The garden kept reminding him to pay attention.
The Ecology of You™ brought those lessons together.
Your Life Is a Living System
The Ecology of You™ offers writing, education, programs, coaching, practices, and experiences designed to help people explore their lives through the patterns and principles of the living world.
If something here feels familiar, there is much more to explore.
